Mindfulness and Resilience Training for Health Care Professionals

(3 Minutes) Two Feet, One Breath: Mindfulness technique to ground yourself in the present moment when experiencing a moment of stress or anxiety - or in a moment of joy.

Research on mindfulness practices conducted by The American Psychological Association found that participants who incorporated mindfulness in their lives had: decreased stress and anxiety, increased compassion, improved ability to focus and concentration, more effective relationships and communication skills.

Informal mindfulness is bringing attention and kindness to life’s daily activities. We developed a series of mindfulness technique videos for healthcare professionals during the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic to help essential workers incorporate awareness techniques into daily life, allowing them to better cope with stress and anxiety and to savor life’s joyful moments. Two Feet, One Breath is an example from this series.

How we work together:

After an assessment of your medical center’s mission and goals, a program is created to meet your needs. The mindfulness presentation, workshop or course can be presented in an accessible and engaging environment.  All participants leave the training with mindfulness tools to use immediately at work and in their lives.

In addition, mentoring is available for employees to become mindfulness and resilience ambassadors. Participants will receive mediation recordings and resources to develop and deepen their mindfulness and resilience skills beyond the training.

■ Julia Sarazine, DNP, APRN, FNP-BC ■ Mary Heitschmidt, PhD, APRN ■ Hugh Vondracek, MSc, BK  ■ Samantha Sarris, MBA  ■ Natalia Marcincowski, RN ■ Ruth Kleinpell, PhD, RN

This study examined the impact of a 4-hour workshop on burnout syndrome, perceived stress, and mindfulness skills. The objective of this study was to determine whether a 4-hour mindfulness workshop was effective in reducing burnout and perceived levels of stress and increasing mindfulness.

Nurses reported decreases in burnout and perceived stress and increases in mindfulness six months after attending a 4-hour mindfulness workshop. After participating in the workshop, many healthcare professionals taught the skills they learned to their colleagues to cope with the daily stress and increase joy in their department or unit.

This proven 4-hour study is available to teach to your organizational team or health care professionals.

The workshops can be taught in one 4-hour session or divided into four 1-hour sessions.

What our participants say:

"Julia's love of people and genuine spirit shine through as she creates a safe environment; allowing me to be open to new ideas. It was well worth the commitment. I was able to take something away from every session. I always left with my shoulders lighter and my spirit easier.  She's a gifted teacher."

“Julia introduced a wide variety of useful tools that have helped me deal with difficult people and situations in my life. The class was a perfect combination of lessons, discussion and practice in and outside of class.  She allowed our group to feel comfortable openly discussing our experiences thereby learning from one another as well as from her.”

“The course was more comprehensive than I expected. It was not just meditation techniques, but a broader perspective on how mindfulness can work with one’s personal story. I was surprised that this method has worked so well for me in such a short period of time.”

“I am sleeping better, I face the stress of life more calmly. I see the beauty and humor in life now.”

“I found the program excellent! I learned so much about my reactions and thoughts that will guide me for the rest of my life.”

“This course was a life altering experience which helped me to give myself more compassion and grace.”

“Mindfulness is a way to reduce the stress of the frantic life we all lead; it allows us to go against the tide of constant string, to find gratitude in where we are now.”

“The program was excellent and I love the live instruction. I am surprised how much I enjoy being mindful and how much I tried to escape my life by using my cell phone, TV, ect before the course.”

“As a result of this experience, I'm better at "smelling the roses", letting irrelevant things go and focusing on what matters in my life.  Overall, a very healthy experience that I'm glad I gave myself.  I'd recommend it to anyone - you will benefit from it!”
